Communion
24 x 18, Acrylic on Canvas, James
Bennett, 2019
-
There is a very realistically painted
golden cup in the center of the image.
It is filled to the brim with a red
liquid.
-
Below the cup is a loaf of bread
broken in half.
-
A ghostly silhouette stands behind.
It is covered in what at first appears to be
nothing more than squiggly lines. On further
inspection, the lines could appear to
be a mass of figures crowded together.
-
These images are contained within an
elliptical,
almond shape which was used extensively in
early Christian art. It is called a mandorla.
-
The background behind the mandorla is
solid black.
-
At the four corners are symbols of
the ancient elements: earth, air, fire, and
water.
