A Pentecost Prayer by James Bennett
Adapted from an invocation at progressivechristianity.org

Meditating on the story of Pentecost, we celebrate the wonderful, mysterious gift of God’s spirit.  From deep within us, and in the world around us, and even beyond into the cosmos we observe the amazing work and power of the spirit. By the power of spirit, faith blossoms and is nourished. Like those first Christians so long ago, we have many languages for faith, many gifts of the spirit.

We speak from our hearts, mirroring God's gift of love.

We speak from our minds, confessing our doubts and skepticism, searching for truths by which we can live.

We speak from our faith, be it fragile or firm; we speak of how it shapes our lives.

We speak from compassion, reaching to one another, stretching for understanding.

OLD-TIME HYMN
The Fire of Pentecost by Haldor Lillenas (Public Domain)

1 I never can forget the moment
When after consecrating all,
And trusting in a full atonement,
I felt the fire of Pentecost fall.

Refrain:
I feel the fire of Pentecost burning just now,
Burning just now, burning just now,
I feel the fire of Pentecost burning just now,
‘Tis burning in my soul.

2 My heart received the fiery cleansing,
My nature was at last renewed;
My soul with joy was over flowing,
With Pentecostal power endued. [Refrain]

3 The inward struggle now is ended,
I’ve won the fight in Jesus name;
And with His free and full salvation,
The Pentecostal blessing I claim. [Refrain]

4 Each justified and true believer
Should be baptized with holy fire,
To burn the roots of sin forever,
And purge away all evil desire. [Refrain]
